THE WORST MARITIME TRAGEDY
On 20th December 1987, a passenger ferry collided with an oil tanker near Manila. The ferry, the Dona Paz, was severely overcrowded and nearly everyone on board was killed. There were only 24 survivors.
The ferry was supposed to carry 1 400 passengers. However, there had been a heavy demand for places, due to the Christmas holidays and the company allowed more than twice its stated capacity to board for the 375-mile journey. During the journey, many of the ship’s officers were drinking and watching television while an apprentice officer piloted the ship through the busy strait.
At the same time, a tanker carrying 8 000 barrels of oil was also coming through the strait. The two vessels collided. There was a huge explosion and both ships sank quickly. The death toll was estimated to be approximately 4 000 – twice as many as the Titanic disaster.
