Axpo’s Bio-LNG Bunkering Breakthrough in Algeciras
Axpo successfully conducted Spain’s first ship-to-ship Bio-LNG bunkering operation at the Port of Algeciras, Cadiz, marking a significant milestone for sustainable marine fuels in large-scale container shipping. Over 4 000 m³ of ISCC-certified Bio-LNG was delivered to the CMA CGM FORT BOURBON, advancing maritime decarbonization efforts.
The Bio-LNG was sourced via virtual liquefaction at the Enagás Regasification Plant in Cartagena, certified under the EU’s International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC EU) since July 2025. This certification ensures compliance with stringent environmental, social, and traceability standards set by the European Commission.

Daniele Corti, Axpo’s small-scale LNG head, stated that the operation reflects the company’s commitment to pioneering sustainable LNG solutions in the Iberian market and supporting maritime decarbonization. Axpo aims to expand its Bio-LNG portfolio to meet the growing demand for cleaner marine fuels and help clients achieve their emissions reduction goals.
Cartagena’s role as a Mediterranean LNG hub highlights its importance in supplying next-generation fuels and supporting Europe’s decarbonization efforts. The operation builds on Axpo’s prior LNG bunkering successes in ports like Málaga, Algeciras, and Sines. A sustainability certificate for the Bio-LNG delivery was issued by Enagás in early August 2025, reinforcing the operation’s environmental credibility.
