Envision Energy’s Breakthrough: First Green Ammonia Bunkering
Envision Energy has completed the world’s first green marine ammonia bunkering operation at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry’s terminal in Dalian, China. This milestone covers the entire value chain of green ammonia fuel, from renewable energy production to powering ammonia-fueled vessels.
The operation is driven by Envision’s Chifeng Green Hydrogen-Ammonia Project, which uses a renewable energy system combining wind, solar, and energy storage, along with proprietary technologies for efficient energy and molecule production. Frank Yu, Envision Energy’s senior vice president, highlighted this as a breakthrough for scaling net-zero fuels in challenging sectors like maritime shipping.

The green ammonia fuel, certified with ISCC Plus and awarded a renewable ammonia certification by Bureau Veritas, powered a 5 500 HP ammonia-fueled port tugboat. The tugboat, equipped with a dual-fuel engine and a 91 % ammonia substitution rate, significantly reduces carbon emissions and has been classified as an “Ammonia Fuel Tug” by the China Classification Society. This operation positions Dalian Port as a hub for green bunkering services, including biofuel, green methanol, LNG, and green ammonia, addressing a key gap in the supply chain for international trade vessels.
