Hanwha Ocean Awards ABB Contract for Singapore’s First Floating LNG Terminal
Hanwha Ocean, a leading shipbuilder in South Korea, has awarded ABB a contract to provide a complete electric power and propulsion system for Singapore’s first floating LNG (FLNG) terminal. This contract marks another significant milestone in the long-standing partnership between ABB and Hanwha Ocean.
The integrated electrical system that ABB will install on the FSRU will include a medium voltage generator, 6,6 kV switchboards for cargo and regasification, as well as the motor, transformer, and drive for propulsion. Additionally, the floating terminal will incorporate ABB’s remote control and diagnostics system, a proven condition monitoring solution, and an enhanced power protection system (EPPS).

The FSRU is scheduled to be delivered to its owner, Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL), in 2027 and will be contracted for long-term charter by Singapore LNG Corp. Pte Ltd (Singapore LNG). With a capacity of 200 000 m³ of LNG, the FSRU will be moored at Jurong Port and connected to the gas network by 2030, under MOL’s management.
This new FSRU represents a strategic investment in Singapore’s energy infrastructure and plays a crucial role in the city-state’s transition to net-zero emissions. Singapore LNG has signed contracts to process 5 million tons per year of LNG at a floating facility, which will enhance flexibility and increase Singapore’s LNG import capacity by 50 % compared to the existing single landside terminal in Jurong.
“We are proud to continue our long-standing collaboration with Hanwha Ocean by supplying an integrated electrical system for Singapore’s first FSRU,” said Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager for Marine Systems in ABB’s Marine & Ports division. “This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to innovation, reliability, and sustainability, and represents ABB’s latest contribution to the critical infrastructure that supports Singapore’s role as a key LNG hub in Asia.“
