Lead Trawler “Kapitan Sokolov”: A New Era in Russia’s Fishing Industry
The lead trawler-processor “Kapitan Sokolov” of project 170701, built at the OSK “Severnaia Verf” shipyard in St. Petersburg for the fishing industry holding “Norebo,” has begun its journey to the home port of Murmansk for fishing trials.
The trawler departed from the Big Port of St. Petersburg on the evening of April 10, according to data from the vessel tracking website MarineTraffic.
During the fishing trials, the operation of the trawler’s mechanisms and equipment will be tested, including the fish processing factory and fishing gear, under real fishing conditions.

The large freezing fishing trawler-processor of project 170701 is designed for catching cod, pollock, haddock, flounder, perch, halibut, shrimp, and other fish species using bottom and pelagic trawling with the capability of using two trawls. The vessel’s design was developed by the design bureau “Nautik Rus.”
The lead trawler of the project, “Kapitan Sokolov,” was laid down at “Severnaia Verf” on November 23, 2018, as part of the investment quota program. It was launched on September 1, 2020. In October 2023, the vessel successfully completed sea trials.
A distinctive feature of the trawler is the new Enduro Bow architecture, which gives the vessel a unique and recognizable style. This bow shape increases the working space on the ship and improves its seaworthiness. Due to the closed shape of the bow, water does not wash over the deck when waves pass, reducing the impact of oncoming waves on the bow and minimizing ice formation on the hull.

The vessel will carry out fish processing on board, producing fish meal and oil, canned liver, and frozen fillets. The trawler is equipped with a modern fish processing factory that allows for the production of fillets of cod and haddock. There are also plans to produce products from other commercial fish species, such as halibut and sea perch.
The factory features automatic packaging and palletizing of products, which are moved to the freezing hold via an elevator and stored on pallets by forklifts.
Currently, five more trawlers of project 170701 – “Kapitan Geller,” “Kapitan Ostashkov,” “Kapitan Tuzov,” “Kapitan Breikhman,” and “Kapitan Ostashkov” – are being completed at the “Severnaia Verf” shipyard.
