UPM Launches WISA-LNG Spruce: Innovative Spruce Plywood for LNG Tank Insulation and Eco-Friendly Gas Transport
Finnish materials solutions company UPM has unveiled WISA-LNG Spruce plywood, a novel material for insulation in liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks, addressing the surging worldwide need for LNG shipping. Developed and validated in partnership with Gaztransport & Technigaz (GTT)—a specialist in liquefied gas transport and storage, and holder of the relevant technology WISA-LNG Spruce is tailored for vessels using Mark III membrane systems and expands UPM’s birch plywood lineup.
GTT’s Group Innovation Vice President Thierry Valot commented: “Material supply is crucial for LNG carrier builds. By incorporating spruce plywood, GTT offers clients expanded capacity and improved procurement options.”

UPM states that the plywood adheres to stringent standards for LNG applications, allowing spruce as a viable substitute without compromising performance. The glue employs WISA BioBond technology, substituting at least 50 % of fossil-derived phenol with lignin to cut carbon emissions. Production occurs at UPM Pellos Plywood Mills in Mikkeli, Finland. This addition means UPM now manufactures LNG plywood across three sites, boosting supply for the LNG maritime industry.
UPM WISA-LNG Product Manager Raija Rautiainen explained: “Sustaining ultra-low temperatures is vital to maintain LNG’s liquid form during transit. Both birch and spruce deliver superior insulation, durability, dimensional stability, and low weight, ensuring secure LNG transport.”
UPM has supplied plywood for LNG carriers for nearly six decades. In June this year, GTT earned two Approvals in Principle (AiP) from Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) for its advanced ethane containment systems, Mark III Slim and NO96 Slim.
