Witherbys Unveils MV Sea Ranger: New Research Vessel for Maritime Training from 2026
Maritime publishing and digital training leader Witherbys has announced the launch of the MV Sea Ranger, a new oceanographic research vessel set to debut in 2026. This vessel will bolster the company’s technical development, real-world navigational studies, and maritime training initiatives, aligning directly with efforts to advance knowledge and safety in shipboard operations.
The MV Sea Ranger will enhance delivery of computer-based training via Witherbys’ eBook Reader, Witherby Connect—already in use on over 40 000 ships—and through partnerships with industry stakeholders. It enables in-depth analysis of ECDIS transitions, S-100 advancements, and practical applications of maritime guidelines in live conditions.

Key activities include global testing of these guides in waterways like the Lombok and Sunda Straits, plus development of expanded editions such as an updated Suez Canal guide. Real-world observations will keep materials accurate, practical, and relevant for mariners globally.
Previously operated by the Schmidt Oceanographic Research Institute for expeditions reaching Antarctica, the MV Sea Ranger boasts proven global capabilities and carries over 1,2 million liters of fuel for a range exceeding 30 000 nautical miles.
Looking ahead, the vessel will drive expansions in publications on maritime security, environmental protection, and shipboard operations—covering emerging threats, MARPOL compliance, and energy efficiency. Collaborations with organizations like ICS and BIMCO will ensure alignment with international standards.
