Orbcomm’s Smart Containers: Evergreen Line Upgrades Fleet for Secure, Sustainable Logistics

Global shipping brand Evergreen Line has started equipping its dry container fleet with smart container technology from Orbcomm. The deployment provides advanced cargo monitoring, including real-time alerts for door openings, temperature changes, shocks, and precise location tracking.

These digital features aim to enhance cargo security, ensure safe operations, and create a “more sustainable and streamlined supply chain,” according to Orbcomm. CEO Sameer Agrawal stated: “This move signals a broader shift in the maritime industry, where dry containers are rapidly evolving from static assets into smart, connected, intelligent units.”

He added that the company “has enabled more than one million smart containers to date.” The latest rollout phase uses Orbcomm’s second-generation smart dry container system, which introduces additional security and cargo integrity sensors, supports longer voyages, and extends device lifespan.

Orbcomm notes the technology delivers consistent performance over time, with “lower” total cost of ownership (TCO) and “highest” return on investment (ROI) for shipping lines.

“Smart intermodal containers are no longer experimental—they are becoming the new standard. Deployments are moving beyond visibility to cargo protection and container security. This evolution reflects growing industry demand for real-time data, enhanced cargo protection, and operational transparency across the global supply chain,” Agrawal emphasized.

Orbcomm operates in the industrial IoT sector, connecting assets in shipping, road haulage, and temperature-controlled fleets. The company reports over 2,4 million connected devices worldwide.

In March this year, Orbcomm announced that Folk Maritime Services Company will implement its smart container monitoring across its entire fleet to boost supply chain visibility and cargo security.
