Launch of Ship WiFi Support Program at Port of Hedland to Enhance Seafarer Connectivity
The Pilbara Ports Ship WiFi Support Program is being launched to enhance connectivity for seafarers at the Port of Hedland, situated in a remote area along the West Australian coast.
This new program replaces the previous system of individual SIM card recharges, offering free internet access throughout the ship and data top-ups for participating vessels each time they return to Port Hedland.

The program aims to improve internet access for all crew members on vessels visiting the port, thereby enhancing seafarer welfare by enabling them to connect with family and friends.
According to Pilbara Ports, ships calling at Port Hedland can obtain the designated Ship WiFi Pack, which includes a Mobile WiFi Router and a Mesh WiFi Extender. Data can be topped up remotely from the port’s berths and anchorages through the Port Hedland Seafarers Centre.
Captain Philip Christy, Executive General Manager Marine at Pilbara Ports, stated, “As professionals responsible for ensuring the smooth operations of large vessels at our ports, it is essential that we provide a safe and innovative way for seafarers to stay connected with their loved ones. This initiative underscores our commitment to promoting inclusivity and connection through technology for all seafarers.”
