World’s First STS LNG Transfer: Hanwha Ocean’s 2025 Breakthrough
South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by successfully conducting the world’s first ship-to-ship (STS) transfer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) during sea trials. The operation likely involved the LNG tankers Maran Gas Syros (92 600 DWT) and Woodside Jirrubakura (93 900 DWT). This innovation reduces environmental impact and addresses delays caused by terminal congestion.
Unlike traditional methods, where vessels load LNG at terminals and return excess fuel, Hanwha Ocean’s technology enables direct transfers between ships at sea, boosting efficiency. This approach minimizes the need for multiple terminal visits, streamlining the gas trial process.
