Union Maritime Partners with Anemoi Marine Technologies to Equip New Chemical Tankers with Rotor Sails

Union Maritime is set to incorporate innovative Rotor Sails manufactured by Anemoi Marine Technologies on two new chemical tankers currently being constructed at Wuhu Shipyard in China. Each of these vessels will be outfitted with two EX-rated Rotor Sails, measuring 3,5 meters in diameter and varying in height at 20,5 meters and 24 meters, respectively. Installation of the sails is planned for early 2026, coinciding with their production at Anemoi’s facility in China.

This strategic move is a key part of Union Maritime’s effort to surpass the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) emissions reduction goals for 2030. The IMO has set requirements for a minimum 20 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 2008 levels, alongside a mandate that at least 5 % of energy used comes from zero-emission or near-zero-emission sources.

Bhuvnesh Dogra, Union Maritime’s chief technical officer, highlighted that wind propulsion is central to their sustainability roadmap and is pivotal to their collaborative initiative, Project AeroPower. This initiative showcases their commitment to integrating innovative solutions in their operations. Dogra stated confidence in Anemoi‘s Rotor Sail technology, believing it will enable them to build one of the most energy-efficient fleets at sea.

The design work for integrating the Rotor Sails with the new tankers was completed by Odely Marine, a consultancy based in China. After a thorough assessment of various wind propulsion technologies, Union Maritime chose to partner with Anemoi because of their reputation for scalable, high-impact innovation. Anemoi made key adjustments to previous foundation arrangements to allow for the successful installation of the sails on these vessels.

Clare Urmston, CEO of Anemoi, expressed pride in partnering with Union Maritime, emphasizing that integrating Anemoi Rotor Sails from the outset represents what can be achieved when forward-thinking owners commit to wind-assisted propulsion.

She underscored that this project not only demonstrates the operational benefits of their technology but also sets a new benchmark for efficiency in future-ready chemical tankers. This collaboration marks a significant step toward more sustainable maritime operations, paving the way for innovations that align with global environmental targets.
