Deepwell Pump – Definition and Pronunciation
What is Deepwell Pump?
Deepwell pump is a type of centrifugal cargo pump commonly found on gas carriers. The prime mover, usually but not always an electric motor, is flange-mounted on top of the cargo tank drives, through a long transmission shaft, the pump assembly located in the bottom of the tank. The discharge pipe surrounds the drive shaft and the bearings of the shaft are cooled and lubricated by the liquid by the liquid pumped.
Examples of Deepwell Pump
The reference to «cargo pumps» includes all pumps that transfer liquid cargo, including «primary pumps» (for example, deepwell pumps and submerged pumps), «spray pumps», «booster pumps», etc. Likewise the reference to (cargo) «compressors» includes all machines transferring cargo vapour.

Deepwell Pumps – are the most common pump for LPG Carriers, they might be driven electrically or hydraulically (through a sealing arrangement) by a motor which is mounted outside the tank.

Each tank is equipped with two submerged electric pumps located at the aft part and one electric deepwell pump located at the centre. The cargo liquefaction plant is installed in a single deck house, amidships. A cargo control room is located within the fore part of the all-aft accomodation.
