Carbamates – Definition and Pronunciation
What is Carbamates?
Carbamates are a white powdery substance produced by the reaction of ammonia with carbon dioxide.
Examples of Carbamates
Inert gas from a combustion type generator must never be used in preparation for carrying ammonia because of the reaction of ammonia vapor with the carbon dioxide content of such inert gas to form carbamates.
From “Efficient Cargo Tank Operations – Inerting, Purging and Cooling Techniques”.
Inert gas from a combustion-type generator must never be used when preparing tanks for ammonia. This is because ammonia reacts with the carbon dioxide in inert gas to produce carbamates.
From “Preparation and Execution Cargo Operations LNG and LPG”.
Ammonia should never be loaded into a tank that contains an atmosphere of combustion generated inert gas, as the ammonia will react with the carbon dioxide in the inert gas to produce carbamates.
From “Preparation of loading and unloading operations for LNG/LPG carriers”.
