Condensation – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˌkɒn.dɛnˈseɪ.ʃən]

What is Condensation?

Condensation is a exothermic process, where a substance is converted from a vapour into a liquid state, meaning that it releases heat.

Examples of Condensation

When LNG is released into the environment, cold vapours are formed that result in condensation of the water vapour present in the air. This phenomenon means that LNG vapour is visible at low temperature due to the mist created.

From “LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) as Fuel”.

Prior to any cold testing taking place, the dew point in the cargo piping system, cargo tanks, and insulation spaces should be reduced to a level below that at which condensation is likely to occur.

From “Guide for Planning Gas Trials for LNG Vessels”.

The storage tank should be insulated so as to prevent condensation of the boil-off vapour on the tank shell above the ammonia liquid level; laboratory tests (Reference 1) have shown that SCC only occurs when liquid ammonia is in contact with the steel, and that a tank shell temperature 3 °C lower than the bulk liquid ammonia is sufficient for condensation and SCC to occur.

From “Minimize SCC in Liquefied Ammonia Tanks”.
