Meteorological Area (METAREA) – Definition and Pronunciation
What is METAREA?
METAREA is meteorological area corresponding to the NAVAREAs defined by the IMO.
Examples of METAREA
The area can be defined as a NAVAREA/METAREA, or may be uniquely defined. This feature of the EGC system is useful for such things as local storm warnings, or shore-to-ship alerts, regarding which it is inappropriate to alert all ships in an Ocean Region.

The area may be expressed in terms of a fixed, pre-defined area such as the NAVAREA/METAREA, or satellite coastal warning area, or in terms of an absolute geographical address expressed as latitude and longitude coordinates on the surface of the earth.

This may require co-ordination with adjacent NAVAREA/METAREA and other MSI providers. In an area of overlap coverage from two or three ocean region satellites, distress alert relays and urgency warnings will be broadcast over all satellites which cover the affected region.
