Quick Connect/Disconnect Coupling (QCDC) – Definition and Pronunciation
What is QCDC?
QCDCs (Quick Connect/Disconnect Coupling) may be fitted at hard-arm presentation flanges for coupling to the ship’s manifold. The QCDC is an alternative to bolted methods. Where fitted it is usually operated by hydraulic means.
Examples of QCDC
QCDCs are sometimes fitted for very special reasons, however, they introduce significant risks in comparison to flange-to-flange bolted connections.
From “Analysis of Incidents”.
A safety issue where a QCDC can be of benefit is the connection and disconnection operation when the ship ts moving with the sea state. In such circumstances the manual bolting of flanges can be hazardous to operations personnel.
From “Loading Arms (Hard-Arms) – Specifications, Operation, and Maintenance”.
The shore-to-ship loading arm was fitted with a QCDC quick connect/disconnect coupling that was designed to operate if a ship failed in its mooring management and drifted out of the loading envelope.
