Seaworthiness – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˈsiːˌwɜːr.ði.nəs]

What is Seaworthiness?

Seaworthiness is a statement on the condition of the vessel for the trade or service in which it is employed.

Examples of Seaworthiness

Do not confuse size with seaworthiness. The trend is for bluewater boats to be 40 ft (12 m) LOA or larger but this requirement is not written in stone and often the extra comfort that larger size should bring is lost because of the numbers on board.

From “What size of boat do you need? What hull material?”.

Additionally, a boat inspection often involves a sea trial, where the vessel is taken out on the water to evaluate its handling, engine performance, and overall seaworthiness.

From “Technical Advice on the Boat Inspection Process and Why Survey Your Own Boat”.

My three sailboat buying choices – new, goodcondition used, and fixer-upper – are arbitrary conditions. There are a million shades of gray when it comes to boat condition, and it’s up to you as the buyer to determine the seaworthiness of the used craft you’re thinking of purchasing.
