What is R22?

R22 is a refrigerant gas whose chemical formula is CHCIF2 It is colourless, odourless and non-flammable. It is virtually non4oxic with a TLV of 1 000 ppm. Its relatively low toxicity and flammability levels render it suitable for use on gas carriers and is approved for such use under the IGC Code.

Examples of R22

The drier is normally cooled by R22 refrigerant. Here the air is cooled and the water vapour is condensed out and drained off.

Cascade Direct Cycle – is mainly used for refrigerated cargoes. It utilizes a refrigerant such as R22 (monochlorodifluoromethane) to cool the condenser, thus obtaining lower temperatures.

From “Basic Knowledge of Tankers”.

Up to now the refrigerant R22 was used for the first stage of the cascade. However, according to the Montreal protocol, this product will be phased out by the year 2020 at the latest. A recent trend is to use a closed circuit of propane instead of R22.
