ERC – Definition and Pronunciation
What is ERC?
ERC is a device fitted in a hard-arm to provide a means of quick disconnection in case of an emergency.
Examples of ERC
Equally, efforts by some terminals to connect large arms to smaller ships can also be misguided when multiple reducers are contemplated at the ship’s manifold. Unless properly engineered, this increases the physical lever on the ship’s structure and can cause fracture of the manifold and maloperation of ERCs.

The foregoing systems provide ESD in case of emergencies (such as spills and fires) and the ERC (or BAC) provide dry-break facilities for cases of ship break-out.
From “Emergency Shut-Down and Emergency Release”.
