What is IMO?

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for promoting safe, secure, and efficient shipping on clean oceans. It establishes global standards for the safety and environmental performance of international shipping, addressing issues such as maritime safety, security, and pollution prevention.

At the beginning of the 1970’s The Marine Safety Committee (MSC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), known then as the International Maritime Consultative Organization (IMCO), started work on a Gas Carrier Code with the participation of the major country delegations representing Gas Carrier owners, the International Association of Classification Societies, the United States Coast Guard and several other International associations.

It was first in the year 1948 that such a convention was adopted. In Geneva, the formal establishment of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) was conducted. Ten years later, in 1958 the convention entered into force.
