Natural Boil-Off Gas (NBOG) – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˈɛn.bi.ɒg]

What is NBOG?

NBOG, or Natural Boil-Off Gas, refers to the gas that naturally evaporates from liquefied natural gas (LNG) during transportation and storage. This gas can be utilized as a fuel source, enhancing the efficiency of LNG operations and reducing waste.

Examples of DSC

The cargo tank NBOG, and FBOG where necessary, enter the vapour main via the cargo tank gas domes where it is directed via the mist separator to the LD or FG compressors.

From “Gas Combustion Systems on Liquefied Gas Carriers”.

It is produced by pumping LNG from the cargo tanks to the forcing vaporiser and the resulting FBOG is led through a mist separator and a buffer tank to the gas heater, where it mixes with the NBOG from the LD compressor.

From “Dual-fuel diesel electric/Tri-fuel diesel electric (DFDE/TFDE)”.

On passage, the natural boil-off gas (NBOG) rate can vary through changes in the barometric pressure, ambient temperature and the sea conditions. The NBOG will also vary according to the age and design of the containment system and may be between 0,07 % and 0,15 % of the cargo volume per day.

From “Low Duty Compressor(s) on the Liquefied Natural Gas Carriers”.
