Natural Gas Liquids (NGL) – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˌɛn.dʒiːˈɛl]

What is NGL?

NGL is an abbreviation for natural liquid hydrocarbons, such as ethane, propane, butane, pentane and natural gasoline, extracted from field gas.

Examples of NGL

Once extracted, the NGLs are routed to the fractionation system where condensate, LPGs and the refrigerants used in the liquefaction process are separated out. The LPG may be further split into butane and propane and sent to the LPG storage tanks.

From “Offshore terminal for transshipment of liquefied gas”.

In oil wells, the natural gas may be in solution with the crude oil or it may sit as a gas cap above it. Natural gas contains small quantities of heavier hydrocarbons, which are collectively known as NGLs.

From “Overview of the Carriage of Liquefied Gases by Sea”.

Once natural gas liquids (NGLs) have been removed from the natural gas stream, they must be fractionated into their base components, which can be sold as high purity products.

From “Gas Conditioning and Natural Gas Liquids Recovery Technologies”.
