[səbˈmɜrdʒd pʌmp]

What is Submerged Pump?

Submerged pump is a type of centrifugal cargo pump commonly installed on gas carriers and in terminals in the bottom of a cargo tank, i.e. with drive motor, impeller and bearings totally submerged when the tank contains bulk liquid.

Examples of Submerged Pump

Submerged pumps are used on LNGC and the low temperature of the cargo is used as a cooling medium for the submerged electric motor. The pump assembly and electric motor are installed in the bottom of the cargo tank.

From “Use of Cargo Pumps on Liquefied Gas Carriers”.

The transfer flow can be typically created by pressure build up when using pressurized storage, submerged pumps or external sealless cryogenic pumps.

From “Balancing Cleaner Fuel and Environmental Impact in LNG Emissions”.

The reference to «cargo pumps» includes all pumps that transfer liquid cargo, including «primary pumps» (for example, deepwell pumps and submerged pumps), «spray pumps», «booster pumps», etc. Likewise the reference to (cargo) «compressors» includes all machines transferring cargo vapour.
