Grounding (Maritime Term) – Definition and Pronunciation
What is Grounding?
Grounding is a contact by a ship with the bottom while she is moored or anchored or under way.
Examples of Grounding
Available records do not report any serious accident on an LNG carrier as direct result of carriage of LNG. No LNG related accidents have occurred to LNGC’s (e. g. grounding, engine room fire, etc.) none of which created particular problems for the presence of LNG in the holds.

Although this would almost seem too obvious a point to mention, groundings have occurred for this very reason. Automatic features are intended to facilitate navigation, not to eliminate the need for common sense.
From “Practical Aspects of Loran Navigation”.
Some mariners have excessively optimistic expectations for the accuracy of the system and little knowledge of how accuracy varies throughout the coverage area – thereby facing increased risk of grounding or other navigational mishaps
