Isothermal – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˌaɪsəʊˈθɜːrməl]

What is Isothermal?

When a gas passes through a series of pressure and/or volume variations without change of temperature, the changes are called “isothermal”.

Examples of Isothermal

An isothermal process is one that takes place at constant temperature, for example phase changes from liquid to vapour. Boyle’s Law is an example of an isothermal process.

From “Gas laws, thermodynamic principles and reliquefaction”.

However, there are cases wherein reduction of pressure isothermally would condense relatively large volumes of liquid in the pores, raising the liquid saturation high enough for some liquid to migrate to producing wells.

From “Complete Manual for Engineers about Dew Point Reservoirs”.

Isothermal compression occurs when the temperature is kept constant as the pressure increases. This requires continuous removal of the heat of compression.

From “Usage of Natural Gas Compressors in the Gas Production Operations”.
