Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) – Definition and Pronunciation
What is MDO?
MDO, or Marine Diesel Oil, is a type of fuel specifically designed for use in marine engines. It is a blend of low-viscosity marine diesel and distillates, providing efficient power for ships and vessels.
Examples of MDO
Complying with the international and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations requires switching either to a distilled fuel, such as Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) or Marine Gas Oil (MGO), using another alternative fuel such as natural gas, or installing an exhaust gas scrubber system.

Vessels that trade between areas with different sulphur limitations should test the MGO and MDO received on board as the Bunker Receipt may only give the max/min values of the viscosity.

The X-DF engines may be operated in either: gas mode with < 1 % MDO pilot and gas; diesel mode, with 100 % MDO/HFO; adjustable ratio of gas to HFO. This can be used to balance between the available BOG and the desired ship speed.
