Shrinkage – Definition and Pronunciation

[ˈʃrɪŋ.kɪdʒ]

What is Shrinkage?

Shrinkage is the reduction in volume of wet natural gas caused by the removal of natural gas liquids, hydrogen sulphide, carbon dioxide, water vapour and other impurities from the gas.

Examples of Shrinkage

NO.96 System General Description. This system is based on two identical invar membranes. Invar is a 36 % nickel alloy with a very low shrinkage coefficient about 10 times less than the steel (1,2 × 10-6m/m/°C).

From “Key Characteristics of Membrane Tanks Systems”.

A vapor barrier of aluminum foil or polyurethane/butyl rubber composite coating is applied in the outer surface. In order to allow the necessary shrinkage in the horizontal and vertical directions, expansion joints are provided in each panel.

From “Independent Cargo Tanks”.

After starting the arm cooling down process, and immediately after LNG is transferred into the ship, the ship-shore connection at the manifold should be carefully monitored because leaks are like to occur at this location on account of unequal shrinkage of SDP and piping.

From “Quality control of cargo handling work in LNG carriers”.
