NATO to Launch Navy Policing Missions in the Baltic Sea Amid Rising Tensions with Russia

NATO intends to launch military patrol missions in the Baltic Sea, referred to as Navy Policing, with the aim of blocking the Russian merchant fleet. This opinion was expressed by military expert Alexander Stepanov, a program director at the Academy of Political Sciences and a senior researcher at the Institute of Latin America of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in an interview with TASS.

On November 27, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk proposed at a meeting of the heads of government of Northern European and Baltic countries to organize joint military patrols in the Baltic Sea, similar to NATO’s air policing. The Polish Prime Minister emphasized the anti-Russian focus of the initiative without going into details.

In an effort to maintain dominance over maritime communications and to block the Russian merchant fleet, NATO is increasing its naval capabilities and plans to deploy unmanned patrols in key waters adjacent to our country. In support of these aggressive intentions, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk recently proposed creating a Navy Policing mission in the Baltic, modeled after the Air Policing mission. It is evident that the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ practice of using unmanned aerial vehicles in the Black Sea served as a technological prelude and a ‘testbed’ ahead of NATO’s global plan to establish control over key maritime areas,” said Alexander Stepanov.

He also reminded that on December 16, the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, five Northern European countries, and three Baltic states agreed to “deter and suppress” the activities of the Russian fleet.

“The goal now is not only military but also economic—deterring Russia’s cooperation with its partners in the energy sector by blocking maritime logistics,” he clarified.

The project is planned to be implemented by the next NATO summit in 2025 and will be divided into several phases.

Solutions developed through proxies in combat conditions are subject to scaling and are intended for mass implementation, including in the Baltic maritime theater of operations, and potentially extending to Arctic waters,” Stepanov added.
