The Taiwan Coast Guard reported the successful rescue of nineteen crew members from the bulk carrier BLUE LAGOON, which experienced flooding off the coast of Taiwan. The vessel began taking on water in its engine room while located approximately 18 miles southwest of Orchid Island, prompting the crew to abandon ship.
On October 1, at 4:28 AM local time, the Taiwan Coast Guard received a distress signal regarding the BLUE LAGOON from the Keelung Coast Radio. In response, the Coast Guard initiated a rescue operation, deploying a ship from Kaohsiung and a helicopter to assist the crew.
The rescue helicopter arrived at the scene at 6:44 AM but was unable to evacuate the crew due to poor weather conditions caused by Typhoon Santauer. Later, around 10:30 AM, a second helicopter joined the operation, and by noon, all crew members were safely rescued. The group included seven Ukrainians, nine Egyptians, and three Russian nationals.
The Barbados-flagged vessel ran aground near Orchid Island and is currently being monitored. It was carrying a load of 67 500 tons of ore, along with 266 tons of diesel and low-sulfur fuel.
BLUE LAGOON departed from Caofeidian Port in China on September 24 and was scheduled to arrive in Singapore by October 12.
