The Philippines plans to maintain a constant presence in the contested Sabina Shoal in the South China Sea, according to its coast guard. On Monday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) confirmed that their vessel, Teresa Magbanua, which had been deployed to the area since April to monitor suspected Chinese land reclamation activities, has returned to port after five months. The vessel’s return was not in response to Chinese demands for withdrawal but was necessary for repairs and crew medical needs.
Sabina Shoal, known as Xianbin Reef to China and Escoda Shoal to the Philippines, is situated west of Palawan within the Philippine exclusive economic zone. PCG Spokesperson Jay Tarriela emphasized the commitment to maintaining a coast guard presence in the shoal at all times.
In response, China’s coast guard stated they will continue law enforcement activities in the waters they claim under Beijing’s jurisdiction to protect their sovereignty and maritime rights. China asserts sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, which overlaps with maritime zones of several other countries, including the Philippines. The Hague arbitration tribunal ruled against China’s extensive claims in 2016, a decision Beijing does not accept.
