ABS and Saronic Technologies: Shaping the Future of Autonomous Maritime Techs

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and Saronic Technologies have announced a strategic partnership to advance autonomous technologies for maritime use. The two organizations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on projects focused on enhancing technical standards for autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) and providing classification services for Saronic’s autonomous systems.

Saronic co-founder and CEO Dino Mavrookas expressed enthusiasm about partnering with ABS, a recognized leader in maritime safety and innovation standards. He highlighted the opportunity to contribute expertise to shape industry standards for this emerging vessel class while ensuring high safety, reliability, and efficiency standards for their technology.

ABS, known for supporting innovative autonomous and remotely controlled technologies in the maritime and offshore sectors, is excited about the collaboration. ABS Chairman and CEO Christopher J. Wiernicki noted that advancing autonomous technologies and uncrewed systems promises safer, more efficient maritime operations globally.

Additionally, ABS recently developed a simulation tool, in partnership with Texas A&M University, to manage thermal runaway incidents in lithium-ion battery fires, enhancing safety measures. In June, ABS also granted an Approval in Principle (AIP) to Hyundai Heavy Industries and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering for a floating module design powered by small modular reactors (SMRs), aimed at supplying electricity to offshore and coastal areas, including harbor services and land-based communities.
