Brands Hatch: A Revolutionary Aframax Tanker Equipped with WindWings Technology
Classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has announced the successful delivery of the Brands Hatch, which is touted as the world’s first newly built Aframax tanker equipped with wind-assisted propulsion.
Constructed by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding for Union Maritime, the Brands Hatch vessel has a deadweight tonnage of 114 000 and features three 37,5-meter tall WindWings developed by BAR Technologies.

These sails are designed to intelligently adjust for optimal aerodynamic efficiency, providing additional thrust that can help reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. John Cooper, CEO of BAR Technologies, stated:
“The vessel equipped with WindWings is part of UML’s broader energy transition strategy, and the success of this project paves the way for more vessels of similar size and configuration under LR Class. This includes another vessel with the same owner, ship type, and technology that is already in progress at Yangzijiang Shipyard, with WindWings again produced by China Merchants Energy Tech in Shanghai”.
The WindWings system has shown potential daily fuel savings of up to 14,5 tons and CO2 emission reductions of up to 45 tons under ideal conditions. Annually, the tanker is expected to save around 12 % on fuel, which equates to nearly 5 000 tons of CO2 savings.
LR provided extensive technical services from the design phase to the delivery of the vessel, including Approval in Principle, HAZID/HAZOP processes, and design appraisal. Additionally, LR ensured that the installation of WindWings met strict safety standards and coordinated with flag authorities.
The classification society’s involvement extended to supervising the installation and sea trials, confirming the system’s effectiveness and the vessel’s seaworthiness.
Tony Han, LR’s lead specialist, remarked:
“As the first vessel in China equipped with the wind-wing system, LR has offered a comprehensive range of technical services to our clients. From drawing approvals to commissioning tests, LR has showcased its strong technical expertise in supporting the client. Building on the success of this project, we aim to expand our collaboration with clients regarding the application of this new technology in the shipping industry.”
In May, BAR Technologies received the Bureau Veritas Type Approval Design Certificate for its WindWings system.
This certification validates the WindWings for fleet integration and confirms its structural integrity, performance reliability, and commercial readiness following a thorough review process.
