Cargo Ship Amnah Capsizes in Istanbul: Crew Makes Miraculous Escape

Dramatic footage captures the crew of the cargo ship Amnah making a frantic escape as the vessel tilts and ultimately capsizes at an Istanbul port, sending large containers crashing into the water.

The crew aboard the heavily loaded Amnah had a narrow escape, managing to reach the shore just before the ship sank. The video shows the ship tipping over at the Ambarli-Marpot port in Istanbul, Turkey, with reports indicating that around 15 crew members scrambled off just in time.

As the ship became unbalanced, the massive containers slid off and fell into the water. Additional footage reveals that some crew members, unable to reach safety in time, had to jump into the water and were later rescued by tugboats. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries reported.

Turkey’s transportation ministry issued a statement on X, confirming that 15 personnel were evacuated from the Comoros-flagged Amnah, which was lying on its side at the port. They also noted that the risk of sea pollution was mitigated by surrounding the ship with a floating barrier, and rescue operations were initiated under the coordination of the port authority.

The Amnah, built in 1996 and measuring over 100 meters in length, had arrived in Istanbul from Derince Port in Izmit Bay, located west of the city.

In a related story, a man survived 19 hours in the ocean off the Australian coast after falling from a cargo ship. He had his ID, wallet, and cigarettes secured in a sealed plastic bag. After plunging into the water from the 235-meter Double Delight bulk carrier around 11:30 PM on November 7, he swam throughout the night and was still 5 kilometers offshore when fishermen spotted him the next day.

Glen Valaire, one of the fishermen and a doctor, treated the man, who is reported to be in his 20s and a Vietnamese national. Dr. Valaire described the moment they found him as a miracle, noting that the man was extremely fatigued, cold, and had a weak pulse, raising concerns for his well-being.
