US Central Command Strikes Houthi Targets in Yemen to Protect Maritime Security
On Friday, US Central Command (CENTCOM) forces carried out strikes on 15 Houthi targets in Yemen’s Houthi-controlled regions. The operation, which occurred at approximately 5 pm local time in Sanaa, was aimed at neutralizing the Houthis’ offensive military capabilities in order to protect maritime security. According to CENTCOM, the strikes were intended to safeguard the freedom of navigation and ensure the safety of international waters for US, coalition forces, and commercial vessels.
The airstrikes come in direct response to a series of ongoing Houthi attacks on commercial shipping that have intensified since November 2023. The Iranian-backed Houthi group has targeted over 100 vessels during this period, resulting in the sinking of two ships and the death of four civilians. The Houthis claim that their actions are in solidarity with Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
Recent events emphasize the continued threat to maritime safety in the region. This week, two separate attacks occurred in the Southern Red Sea. The Panama-flagged oil tanker Cordelia Moon was struck by several missiles and an unmanned surface vessel (USV), causing damage to its port side. Additionally, the bulk carrier Minoan Courage was hit by a missile, though, in both incidents, no crew members were harmed.
Authorities warn that the Houthis retain both the capability and intent to target vessels associated with the US, UK, or Israel, along with US Navy assets and coalition partners. The threat now extends to ships belonging to companies that have been linked to Israeli port calls, increasing the risks for global shipping in the area.
