UK Invests £30 m in Green Maritime Future

The UK government has announced a £30 million ($40,6 million) investment to decarbonize the maritime industry, unveiled by Maritime Minister Mike Kane at Clydeport, Glasgow, as part of the sixth round of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition (CMDC).

The funds will support companies developing green fuels and technologies, including hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, solar, and electric solutions, to promote sustainable shipping and boost local economies. The CMDC, under the UK SHORE program, has allocated over £136 million to 142 organizations, engaging 300+ entities, including 250 SMEs.

Key projects include electric chargepoint networks at ports like Aberdeen, an electric crew transfer vessel at Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm, and a green hydrogen shore power trial at Leith. The FastRig windsail, reducing emissions by up to 40 %, received £3,3 million and has been tested at sea.

Additionally, £3 million will upgrade Clydeport’s King George V Dock to support wind turbine components, while £3,85 million funds the Clean Maritime Research Hub, including a liquid hydrogen facility at Durham University.

These initiatives support the UK’s goal of net-zero shipping by 2050, driving innovation, job creation, and economic growth in coastal communities.
