Indian Navy Fast Response Boat Collides with Ferry Near Mumbai, Resulting in 13 Fatalities

On Wednesday, a fast response boat from the Indian Navy collided with a ferry off the coast of Mumbai, resulting in the deaths of 13 individuals. A large-scale search operation continued into the night to find any additional survivors.

Navy officials reported that the response boat was conducting speed trials after having its engine replaced. Around 6:30 PM, a malfunction caused the engine to become stuck at full throttle, leading to a disastrous situation. The crew attempted to maneuver the boat but were unsuccessful, ultimately colliding with the ferry.

A video recorded by passengers on the ferry captured the final moments of the navy boat. It initially made a gentle S-turn away from the ferry but then turned back on a collision course while maintaining high speed. The operator made several course corrections before the impact. Following the collision, the ferry sank.

At the time of the incident, the ferry was en route to Elephanta Island, a well-known pilgrimage destination with ancient temples. There were approximately 110 people on board; 13 individuals, including one Indian Navy sailor and two OEM contractors from the response boat, lost their lives.

A total of 101 people were rescued, with four in critical condition. After the initial response, 11 rescue boats and six helicopters continued to search the area for more survivors. The Indian government is providing a condolence payment of two lakh rupees (about $2 350) to the families of those who died.
