Eco Marine Power Trials Solar Solutions for Greener Shipping
Eco Marine Power has launched evaluation trials for its Aquarius Marine Solar Power system, testing various photovoltaic (PV) module technologies to promote sustainable and eco-friendly shipping. The trials, spanning 12 to 18 months, will evaluate the upgraded solar system’s performance and practicality in real maritime conditions. The first panels tested are from Merlin Solar Technologies, known for their durable, lightweight, and flexible mono-crystalline silicon panels, which are easy to install using a peel-and-stick method.
Bob Brainard, founder of Merlin Solar, highlighted their decade-long experience in marine solar applications, from recreational boats to defense platforms, emphasizing their role in advancing cleaner energy for cargo shipping. Aries Marine has installed Merlin’s glass and non-glass panels on custom frames aboard a ship, with plans to add more PV modules from other manufacturers in the coming months.

Greg Atkinson, president of Eco Marine Power, noted that the enhanced system includes an improved performance management system, and the collaboration with Merlin Solar marks a significant step in evaluating zero-emission technologies for ships. In February 2023, Eco Marine Power partnered with a UAE-based shipping company to explore renewable energy solutions for maritime use.
