GC Rieber Shipping Secures Grant for Zero-Emission Freight Carrier Construction
GC Rieber Shipping’s subsidiary, Polar Energy Shipco, has received a grant from Enova to construct a zero-emission freight carrier. Enova, owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Climate and Environment, focuses on promoting clean energy technology. This initiative aligns with Norway’s commitment to zero-emission maritime transport and the development of sustainable logistics.
GC Rieber Shipping has signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with freight owners GC Rieber Minerals and Franzefoss Minerals to collaborate on the development of the freight carrier. This initiative reflects a joint effort by the companies to reduce the carbon footprint of their supply chains.

The freight carrier will feature advanced battery systems and shore power integration, optimized for short-sea operations along the Norwegian coast. It is anticipated to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution compared to traditional diesel-powered vessels.
The project aims to demonstrate the commercial and environmental advantages of battery-electric propulsion in coastal freight operations. Hynne Hoem, logistics manager at Franzefoss Minerals, stated:
“At Franzefoss Minerals, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our operations. Participating in this project allows us to take a concrete step toward more sustainable freight transport and aligns with our long-term climate goals.”
Additionally, GC Rieber Shipping has entered an LoI with K. Sætre & Sønner for the operation of the vessel. This project is crucial for gaining valuable development and operational experience with battery-electric systems, which will facilitate the broader adoption of clean technologies within the company’s fleet. Per Gunnar Syrdalen, chief commercial officer of GC Rieber Minerals, remarked, “This project is a key enabler for us to deliver low-emission transport of salts and minerals. We are proud to be at the forefront of providing sustainable solutions that our customers and partners continuously seek. We believe that a proactive partnership among freight owners is essential for achieving net-zero maritime solutions. The participation and leadership of our sister company is a bonus that made this possible.”
