Oil Spill Closes Beaches on Gran Canaria: Incident Details and Response

On September 4th, Spanish authorities closed several beaches on Gran Canaria, including La Restinga, Palos, El Barranquillo, and San Bordon, following an oil spill. The spill occurred during the refueling of the vessel AKHISAR at the port of Las Palmas, Spain, resulting in the leakage of three tonnes of IFO 180, a very low sulfur oil.

The spill, which covered an area of 2,5 kilometers by 400 meters, was moving towards Telde in the south. To manage the situation, authorities deployed drones and helicopters for monitoring and cleanup efforts.

The AKHISAR, a general cargo vessel registered under Liberia’s flag, departed from Las Palmas on September 7 and is scheduled to arrive at Praia, Cape Verde, by September 11.
