Project Ra: Green Ammonia Hub for Maritime in East Port Said

Lloyd’s Register (LR) and DAI Infrastruktur have signed a memorandum of understanding for Project Ra, a green ammonia production and bunkering initiative in East Port Said, Egypt. This project aligns with the maritime industry’s shift toward alternative fuels, supporting the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through low- and zero-carbon fuels and carbon pricing mechanisms.

Project Ra aims to produce up to 2 million tonnes of green ammonia annually using renewable energy, with operations set to begin in 2029. The facility will serve as a key bunkering hub for ammonia-powered vessels along the Suez Canal.

Panos Mitrou, LR’s Global Gas Segment Director, emphasized that the partnership supports alternative fuel supply chains, helping shipowners meet post-MEPC 83 regulations. LR will provide advisory services, including pricing analysis, infrastructure planning, risk assessments, regulatory guidance, and emissions analysis.

DAI Infrastruktur CEO Ioannis Papassavvas highlighted Project Ra’s role in delivering reliable green ammonia for the maritime sector, meeting international standards and supporting shipowners and regulators. The project will supply European ports, particularly in Germany and Greece, with green ammonia for bunkering, power generation, and reducing CO₂ emissions in industries like steel production.
