HD Hyundai Partners with DNV and TUI Cruises to Explore SOFC Integration on Cruise Ships
HD Hyundai has entered into a Joint Development Project (JDP) agreement with the classification society DNV and TUI Cruises to investigate the integration of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) systems on cruise ships, in line with the global decarbonization trend.
The SOFC technology provides a highly efficient method for generating electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, which significantly lowers carbon emissions and pollutants.

This technology is particularly suitable for cruise vessels due to its low noise and vibration levels, as well as its high power generation efficiency.
HD Hyundai is focusing on the European market, where stringent environmental regulations and a strong demand for sustainable vessels create a promising opportunity.
The company plans to establish safety design standards for the implementation of SOFC systems on cruise ships, collaborating with its subsidiaries HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering and HD Europe Research & Development Center over the next eight months, starting in June.
Additionally, HD Hyundai’s commitment to the hydrogen fuel cell market is underscored by the recent launch of HD Hydrogen and partnerships with global shipping companies to promote the use of SOFC systems.
