eCap Marine to Power Samskip and Møre Sjø Vessels with Hydrogen for Zero Emissions

German engineering company eCap Marine has secured two contracts to provide hydrogen-based propulsion systems for zero-emission vessels. The company will deliver hydrogen power solutions for Samskip’s short-sea container vessels and Møre Sjø’s bulk carriers.

eCap Marine, having previously retrofitted the commercial vessel Coastal Liberty with hydrogen-powered propulsion, won a contract from Samskip to equip two zero-emission short-sea container vessels, named Samskip SeaShuttles, currently under construction at Cochin Shipyard in India. These vessels will be the first globally to use green hydrogen as fuel. eCap Marine will supply 3,2 MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, complete with marine-approved power electronics, controllers, and safety systems, integrated into a containerized system on the vessels’ aft deck. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.

Concurrently, Norwegian shipping company Møre Sjø contracted eCap Marine to provide hydrogen propulsion systems for two 4 000-tonne deadweight bulk carriers being built at Gelibolu Shipyard in Türkiye for operations in Norwegian coastal waters. Each vessel will feature 1,7 MW PEM hydrogen fuel cells and a compressed hydrogen tank system with a capacity exceeding 2 tonnes, installed in the aft section. Delivery is also planned for 2027.

eCap Marine’s managing director, Lars Ravens, stated that these projects mark a significant milestone for the company and the maritime energy transition, highlighting the scalability of their hydrogen technology.
