Carbon Ridge and Scorpio Tankers: World’s First Centrifugal OCCS on STI SPIGA for Sustainable Shipping
Carbon Ridge, in collaboration with Scorpio Tankers, has launched the shipping industry’s first centrifugal onboard carbon capture system (OCCS) on the LR2 product tanker STI SPIGA, owned by Scorpio Tankers. The pilot project began in July 2025 at Besiktas Shipyard in Turkey, marking a significant milestone in the decarbonization of the maritime sector.
The OCCS technology developed by Carbon Ridge is designed to be modular, cost-effective, and highly efficient, achieving up to 75 % less space usage compared to traditional carbon capture systems. Its flexible installation options, supporting both vertical and horizontal configurations, make it adaptable to various vessel designs. Captured CO₂ is compressed, liquefied, and securely stored onboard throughout the voyage, ensuring safety and convenience.

This innovative system is suitable for both retrofitting existing vessels and integrating into new builds. It is scalable, fuel-agnostic, and enables shipowners to reduce their carbon footprint without requiring extensive modifications to propulsion systems. Carbon Ridge provides a comprehensive solution, combining advanced OCCS technology with logistics for captured CO₂, ensuring full compliance with maritime and regional environmental regulations across the entire value chain.
Chase Dwyer, CEO and founder of Carbon Ridge, emphasized that the system was purpose-built for the maritime industry, unlike other carbon capture solutions adapted from land-based applications. “Our centrifugal OCCS is a groundbreaking, cost-effective, and modular solution, unparalleled in maritime applications. It supports the industry’s decarbonization efforts, and we’re thrilled to see the results of this pilot with Scorpio Tankers,” Dwyer stated.
The project has secured over $20 million in funding from investors, including Katapult Ocean, Alfa8, Crosscut Ventures, and Berge Bulk, reinforcing Carbon Ridge’s leadership in maritime carbon capture solutions. Cameron Mackey, Chief Operating Officer of Scorpio Tankers, highlighted the partnership’s significance, noting, “We’re proud to collaborate with Carbon Ridge, a leader in CCS technology, whose deep understanding of our industry enables practical and innovative solutions for sustainable shipping.”
