Pan Viva Cargo Ship Anchored Off Alaskan Coast Amid Severe Weather Conditions

The Pan Viva, a 738-foot cargo ship flying the Panama flag, remains anchored in a stable condition off the coast of Unalaska, Alaska, despite facing severe weather. With 21 crew members aboard, the ship had raised initial concerns on Saturday when it was reported in distress just 2,3 miles northeast of Unalaska due to extreme weather conditions, including winds reaching up to 58 knots (67 mph) and waves as high as 29 feet. These conditions led to fears that the vessel might run aground, but it has since managed to anchor and maintain stability.

The US Coast Guard, in coordination with local agencies, has been in close contact with the vessel. Overnight, the weather slightly eased, with reports of 30-40 knot winds and 20-foot seas, but conditions are still hazardous. The Coast Guard deployed an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, which successfully evacuated four crew members, transporting them safely to Dutch Harbor. Meanwhile, the Coast Guard Cutter Stratton remains on standby in Udegak Pass, prepared to offer additional support if the situation worsens.

The extreme weather has been caused by a large low-pressure system over the Gulf of Alaska, as tracked by the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Center. This system is generating widespread hazardous marine conditions, with waves in the region exceeding 30 feet and making navigation especially treacherous. Despite these conditions, the Pan Viva has not reported any mechanical failures, and no environmental damage has been detected.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard emphasized that they are working closely with state and local partners, as well as with the Pan Viva itself, to ensure the safety of the crew and prevent any environmental damage. The situation is under constant surveillance, with the Coast Guard evaluating the evolving circumstances and providing regular updates.

As of the latest report, released at 3:30 pm on Saturday, both the weather and the overall situation remain largely unchanged. The Pan Viva remains securely anchored approximately one mile from shore, continuing to battle 20+ foot seas and high winds. The vessel is en route from Dandong, China to Kalama, Washington, and the Coast Guard is closely monitoring its status to ensure that both the ship and crew remain safe amidst the ongoing storm.
