Revolutionizing Maritime Transport: The World’s First Hybrid RoRo Ship
HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, a South Korean shipbuilding company, has successfully delivered the world’s first hybrid roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) ship to CLdN, a Luxembourg-based shipping company.
The delivery of the 234-meter-long Chaumine was announced on March 20, marking the first of two hybrid 8 000 lane meter RoRo vessels ordered by CLdN in 2022. The vessel is equipped with a state-of-the-art propulsion system, featuring two conventional main engines and two large shaft generators, each with a capacity of 6 MW. This allows the ship to generate power or propel itself electrically, achieving a cruising speed of 16-17 knots in full electric mode.

The Chaumine also boasts a range of innovative, eco-friendly technologies, including Elomatic’s patented Elogrid tunnel thruster grid. This energy-saving device is designed to maximize side thrust, enhancing the vessel’s maneuverability and reducing its environmental footprint.
The implementation of this technology is expected to reduce resistance, lower fuel consumption, minimize noise and vibrations, and decrease the environmental impact of maritime operations. Notably, the new ship is NOx TIER III compliant, surpassing the standards of CLdN’s current largest vessels in operation. Furthermore, it is anticipated to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an impressive 40 %.
Additionally, the vessel is equipped with advanced navigation assistance systems, including HiNAS SVM and HiNAS Navigation, developed by Avicus. These systems will provide enhanced navigation capabilities, ensuring safe and efficient operation of the ship.
