ZESTAs and SASHA Coalition Unite for Zero-Emission Shipping Solutions
The Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator (SASHA) Coalition have announced a partnership to advance and implement green shipping technologies. This collaboration aims to promote policy and industry actions to support the maritime energy transition.
Together, the coalitions represent 70 companies advocating for zero-emission technologies, including hydrogen, battery-electric, and wind propulsion systems. ZESTAs unites shipping companies focused on zero-carbon solutions, while the SASHA Coalition, backed by the climate NGO Opportunity Green, brings together stakeholders from the shipping and aviation sectors to promote green hydrogen solutions.

ZESTAs Secretary-General Madadh MacLaine stated that technologies for achieving absolute zero emissions in maritime transport have existed for decades but require robust policy and regulations to become commercially viable. She emphasized that the declining health of oceans underscores the urgent need for action to protect marine ecosystems.
In May 2025, the coalitions co-signed a letter to European commissioners, urging stronger EU green shipping policies to address gaps in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations set in April 2025. Supported by seven industry and non-governmental organizations, the letter called for financial support mechanisms for e-fuel producers under the upcoming Sustainable Transport Investment Plan (STIP). It also proposed expanding the EU maritime emissions trading system to include ships under 5 000 gross tonnes, strengthening FuelEU Maritime targets, and continuing advocacy for ambitious IMO policies to incentivize low-emission solutions.
SASHA Coalition EU Policy Director Aurelia Leeuw noted that combining the expertise of both coalitions amplifies their impact on maritime decarbonization. She highlighted that regulations supporting absolute zero-emission technologies are insufficient, and companies ready to adopt these solutions lack adequate incentives.
The SASHA Coalition will join ZESTAs’ London International Shipping Week event, “HyWindships: How to Achieve Absolute Zero Emissions in Trans-Oceanic Shipping,” on September 16 at the IMO. Industry leaders and policymakers will discuss strategies for achieving zero emissions in maritime operations.
