Tropical Cyclone Sean Closes Ports and Threatens Flooding in Western Australia

The Pilbara Ports Authority announced the closure of the Ports of Dampier, Ashburton, Varanus Island, and Cape Preston West on Saturday due to the formation of Tropical Cyclone Sean off the coast of Western Australia, an area known for its iron ore production. The tropical low-pressure system has already caused heavy rainfall and is expected to strengthen further on Monday, potentially reaching category 3 cyclone status. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology warned of severe thunderstorms and destructive wind gusts of up to 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour affecting offshore island communities.

Pilbara Ports indicated that the cyclone is anticipated to remain well offshore, moving southwest away from the coast. They advised all recreational vessel owners to secure their boats in preparation for cyclonic conditions. Additionally, Port Hedland, Australia’s largest iron ore export hub, was closed on Saturday, with all bulk carriers required to depart by 6 pm local time. This port is crucial for shipments from major mining companies such as BHP Group, Rio Tinto Group, and Fortescue Ltd.

As the cyclone progresses westward along Western Australia’s northern coast, a storm tide is expected between Port Hedland and Exmouth during high tides on Sunday and Monday, which could lead to minor coastal flooding. Residents in potentially affected areas are urged to take precautions to protect their properties and assist their neighbors.

Although the cyclone is likely to stay offshore, it is expected to bring increased rainfall to regions near the Pilbara coast and western Kimberley, with daily totals of 50-100 millimeters (2-4 inches) possible through Monday, and isolated areas may experience even higher amounts. Flooding could disrupt road conditions, impacting travel across the West Kimberley and Pilbara coastal areas, including the Minilya-Exmouth Road, starting late Sunday.
