First Stage of Sea Trials for Ice-Reinforced Passenger Vessel “Onega” Begins

Shipbuilders at the OSK “Krasnaya Kuznitsa” plant, part of the Arkhangelsk branch of the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center, have begun the first stage of sea trials for the passenger vessel “Onega,” which is reinforced for ice and belongs to project REGK.126.

As part of the trials to verify compliance with the declared class of the Federal Agency for Maritime and River Transport (RKO), the vessel has entered the Northern Dvina River, where it tested various speeds and directions while navigating through broken ice. Further stages of testing are planned, according to the announcement.

The ice-reinforced passenger vessel of project REGK.126 is designed for transporting passengers on urban routes in Arkhangelsk and Onega. The project was developed by specialists from the Northern branch of the Russian River Register, taking into account modern comfort and safety requirements, as well as the climatic features of the region.

Two modifications of the vessel have been developed, with capacities of 65 and 100 passengers. The Russian River Register classifies them as “R1,2(ice50)” and “M-PR3,0(ice50).” A total of four vessels of this project are planned for construction. Three of them are intended for transporting residents of the island territories of Arkhangelsk (100 seats each), while one is for the left bank of Onega (65 seats). The customers are JSC “Mashpromleasing” and the State Budgetary Institution of the Arkhangelsk Region “Regional Transport Service” (RTS), which will operate the new vessels.

Previously, the hull model of the REGK.126 vessel underwent testing in broken, solid, and crushed ice. The trials demonstrated that the ice reinforcement class and engine power are suitable for operation in the waters of the seaports of Arkhangelsk and Onega during ice formation and breakup periods. The design of the vessel was developed by the Severodvinsk company “Matrix Marine Engineering.”

The keel-laying of the lead vessel of project REGK.126 took place at the “Krasnaya Kuznitsa” shipyard (Arkhangelsk branch of the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center) on June 29, 2022.

It is worth noting that in December 2021, the Governor of the Arkhangelsk Region, Alexander Tsybulsky, announced that the authorities had reached an agreement with the Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, Denis Manturov, regarding the construction of the passenger vessel. On December 30 of the same year, JSC “Mashpromleasing” signed a contract for the construction of four vessels.

Specifications of the REGK.126 vessel:

  • length — 28,4 m,
  • width — 6,7 m,
  • displacement — 230,4 cubic meters,
  • speed — 12 knots.
