Viking Line Adopts bio-LNG for Eco-Friendly Shipping

Viking Line has begun operating its Ro-Ro vessels, Viking Glory and Viking Grace, on bio-LNG to meet the requirements of Gasum’s FuelEU Maritime (FEUM) pooling service. This decision follows a letter of intent (LOI) signed by Viking Line and Gasum at the end of 2024 to enhance their pooling collaboration.

Both ships operate daily between the Finnish port of Turku and Stockholm, Sweden, transporting passengers and cargo across the Baltic Sea. The consistent route ensures predictable compliance levels for the pooling service.

Jacob Granqvist, Gasum’s Vice President for Maritime, noted that the growing demand for FEUM pooling exceeds what Gasum’s own bunkering vessels can handle alone. Partnering with a trusted company like Viking Line is key to scaling and stabilizing the service, further strengthening their long-standing relationship.

Jan Hanses, CEO of Viking Line, emphasized the company’s goal to lead Finland’s maritime sector toward a fossil-free future. For two years, Viking Line has offered biogas options for the Turku-Stockholm route, and this new initiative increases bio-LNG usage to 50 %, significantly reducing emissions. The collaboration with Gasum supports the European maritime industry’s efforts to lower emissions through biofuel adoption.
