Wärtsilä Gas Solutions Secures Contract for VLGC Systems with Cosco Shipping
Wärtsilä Gas Solutions, a division of the Wärtsilä technology group, has been contracted to provide cargo handling and fuel supply systems for four Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs) currently under construction for Cosco Shipping at the Cosco Shipping (Qidong) Offshore yard.
The initial order for two vessels was placed in the fourth quarter of 2024, followed by an order for two more vessels in the second quarter of 2025. The contract encompasses a comprehensive range of services, including engineering, materials supply, supervision, commissioning, and gas trials for the systems involved.

The materials included in the contract cover machinery, instrumentation, as well as electrical and control systems. Wärtsilä Gas Solutions will also provide on-site support at the shipyard during the construction phase of the vessels.
Barry Yang, the sales manager for Wärtsilä Gas Solutions in China, stated:
“This contract once again emphasizes our strength in this field, especially with Very Large Gas Carriers. Although this is our first contract with Cosco for cargo handling and fuel supply systems, our two companies have a long history of collaboration on various projects, and we are pleased to support them once again on this project.”
The equipment from Wärtsilä Gas Solutions is expected to be delivered to the shipyard in the second half of 2025. The four VLGCs, each with a capacity of 88 000 m3, are scheduled to begin commercial operations in late 2026.
Earlier this month, Wärtsilä was also contracted to provide a conversion package that includes its Fit4Power radical derating solution for the containership ONE Maestro, which is said to optimize engine power output and reduce average fuel consumption by approximately 13 %.
